When I Learned Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

When I first learned Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), it seemed like someone had finally explained something I had been noticing for years.

NLP is the study of how our thoughts, our language, and our behaviors work together. It teaches that each of us experiences life through our own mental "filters." Those filters are shaped by our past experiences, beliefs, memories, and the meaning we have given to different events. That is why two people can go through the very same experience, and come away with completely different thoughts and feelings about what happened.

As I learned NLP, I realized this was exactly what I had been seeing in the people around me. They were viewing life through their own filters which made perfect sense based on what they had experienced. That’s why they mostly could only see things their way.

I became a Master Practitioner of NLP through training connected with the Tad James Company. I use NLP as one of the tools in my healing practice because it helps me recognize patterns in the way people think, the words they choose, and the beliefs they may not even realize they are carrying. It’s the beginning of changing lives.

One of my favorite moments during a session is the classic "light bulb moment." When they suddenly stop, and say, "I never thought of it like that before." Those moments are exciting because they mean we have uncovered a belief or a pattern that has been quietly influencing their life. Once they see it, everything shifts, and they can begin seeing themselves and their situation differently. That is the beginning of change, and creating a life they enjoy living.

One of the things I love most about NLP is that once you understand it, you can't unsee it. It becomes a whole new way of looking at people and understanding why they think, feel, and respond the way they do. It explains so much about human behavior. I naturally find myself noticing these patterns everywhere, and I love helping my clients make those same connections. A new way of looking at something can change everything.
