Hypnosis Is Not What You Think It Is

When many people hear the word hypnosis, they immediately think of something they have seen in a movie or a stage performance. They may picture someone waving a watch, losing control, or being made to do something embarrassing. Those ideas are common, but they are not what therapeutic hypnosis is like.

The hypnosis I use in my work is a natural ability of the human mind. In fact, you experience states of focused attention every day without even thinking about it. Hypnosis is simply using that natural ability in a more intentional way.

Think about a time when you were driving, and you suddenly realized you had arrived at your destination. You were still paying attention to the road, stopping at lights, and responding when needed, but part of your mind was focused somewhere else. This happens in many areas of life. You can become completely involved in a movie, and forget about everything happening around you. You can listen to a song, and be taken back to a memory from years ago. You can read a book, watch TV, sit in a school or church, listen to a speaker, work on your computer, or scroll on your phone, and become deeply focused on what you are experiencing, ignoring everything else. These are all examples of how easily the human mind can enter different states of attention.

Every day, our minds are taking in information from the world around us. The conversations we hear, the stories we watch, the music we listen to, and the messages we see, all have the ability to influence our thoughts, feelings, and focus. This is simply how our minds work.

Hypnosis gives us a way to use this ability with purpose. Instead of our attention being guided only by whatever is happening around us, we can intentionally focus on the thoughts, feelings, and experiences we want to create.

I became interested in hypnosis because of how beautifully it connects with helping people. I became certified as a Master Practitioner of hypnotherapy through training connected to the Tad James Company, one of the well-known international training organizations in the field of NLP and hypnosis. I have continued developing these skills and integrating them into my emotional healing work over many years.

One of the things I love most about hypnosis is that it feels so natural. Many people expect something strange or unfamiliar, and they are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable and peaceful the experience feels. They are still themselves. They are aware. They are choosing to participate. Hypnosis is not about giving your power away. It is about learning how to work with the incredible abilities your own mind already has.
